Cornelius a Lapide was born in Belgium. He studied humanities and philosophy at the Jesuit colleges of Maastricht and Cologne. He enrolled in the Society of Jesus in 1592, and, after two years' novitiate and another year of theology he was ordained as a priest in 1595. He taught philosophy and then was appointed to be a professor of Scripture at Leuven in 1596 and then of Hebrew.
