Cornelius Cornelii à Lapide (Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen, 18 December 1567 – 12 March 1637) Flemish Jesuit and exegete.He was born at Bocholt, in Flemish Limburg, and died in Rome at the age of 69. He studied humanities and philosophy at the Jesuit colleges of Maestricht and Cologne, theology first, for half a year, at the University of Douai, and afterwards for four years at Louvain

Cornelius a Lapide created a Scripture Commentary so complete and scholarly that it was practically the universal commentary in use by Catholics (often available only in 30 some Latin volumes) for hundreds of years. Cornelius a Lapide was born in Belgium. He studied humanities and philosophy at the Jesuit colleges of Maastricht and Cologne. He enrolled in the Society of Jesus in 1592, and, after two years' novitiate and another year of theology he was ordained as a priest in 1595. He taught philosophy and then was appointed to be a professor of Scripture at Leuven in 1596 and then of Hebrew.
